Assistant Child Welfare Ombudsman
Summary: The child welfare ombudsman program is established as an independent non-profit funded by the Executive Department to provide ombudsman services to the children and families of the State regarding child welfare services provided by the Department of Health and Human Services. The Ombudsman will assure that the program shall consider and promote the best interests of the child involved, answer inquiries and investigate, advise and work toward the resolution of complaints of infringement of the rights of the child and family involved.
The Assistant Ombudsman is a full-time exempt salaried position. The Assistant Ombudsman will review cases, complete intake and other telephone calls with complainants and information seekers, and support the Child Welfare Ombudsman in carrying out the duties set out in 22 MRSA §4087-A.
Job Requirements: The Assistant Ombudsman must have excellent oral and written communication skills, a working knowledge of child welfare law and policy, previous experience in child welfare services, and a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Periodic statewide travel is necessary and the Assistant Ombudsman must be comfortable with technology. The position is based in Augusta but part-time remote work is acceptable.
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree is required. A Juris Doctor or a Masters in Social Work is a plus.
Salary Range and Benefits: Full or part-time available, salary based on experience, health insurance, dental insurance, and vision insurance.

Case Reviewers

Case reviewer positions are hourly positions to assist in drafting case-specific ombudsman reviews. The case reviewer position is flexible and compatible with other employment. These positions will be compensated at a competitive hourly rate.
Job Requirements: Case Reviewers should have substantial previous child welfare experience.
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree is required. A Juris Doctor or a Masters in Social Work is a plus.
